Chanukah: the holiday of progress

Two years ago I posted about the ramifications of ches neros vehalacha kebeis Hillel http://kallahmagazine.blogspot.com/2009/11/hillels-approach-for-chanukah-and-for.html

Hillel and Shamai had different views about the order in which Chanukah candles should be lit. Beis Shamai’s view was that the candles should parallel the cows offered during Sukkos, which began with the full number but went down one each day. As we know, we follow the opinion of Beis Hillel, which is to begin with one and add on a candle each successive night.
The way we light, we progress forward to build up to greater and greater light. That's true progress. We tend to think of progress in terms of technological or material advances. But the real progress one is to make through life is to bring out more light -- not more stuff, but the intangible flame of Torah.

In addition to latkes and sufganiyot (and don't forget the chocolate gelt) it is traditional to serve dairy dishes on Chanukah to remember the heroism of Yehudith who killed the enemy's general rather like Yael did (see http://kallahmagazine.blogspot.com/2011/12/scrying-in-scripture.html), though she used a sword rather than a tent peg. Scrying in Scripture

Image
Now there's a word that doesn't come up everyday. You don't have to Google it. I'll provide the Webster online definition right here:
"Scrying (also called crystal gazing, crystal seeing, seeing, or peeping) is a magic practice that involves seeing things supernaturally in a medium, usually for purposes of divination or fortune-telling. The media used are most commonly reflective, translucent, or luminescent substances such as crystals, stones, glass, mirrors, water, fire, or smoke. Scrying has been used in many cultures as a means of divining the past, present, or future."

Like other practices of divination, scrying would come under the general order of black magic and necromancy that is forbidden by the Torah. But we see that some people did use these means. According to some views, the reason Rachel stole her father's Teraphim was because they could be used for divination, and she wished to prevent him from using them to find out where Yaakov had gone …

Ever notice that there are no women on Hatazalah?

Quotes from  http://www.nbcnewyork.com/news/local/NYC-Jewish-Women-Want-to-Join-All-Male-EMT-Hatzolah-134563453.html :
Now a group of women in one of the country's largest Orthodox Jewish communities is proposing to join up with Hatzolah as emergency medical technicians to respond in cases of labor or gynecological emergencies. The proposal for a women's division has stirred up criticism within Orthodox Jewish circles, with one well-known blog editorializing that it amounts to a "new radical feminist agenda." And when a prominent elected local official, Assemblyman Dov Hikind, spoke about it on his weekly radio show, he was criticized for even bringing the subject up.Rachel Freier, a Hasidic attorney who is representing the women in the Borough Park neighborhood of Brooklyn, said there is a need for emergency services that adhere to the community's customs of modesty, calling for the sexes to avoid physical contact unless they are related."It has nothing to do…

You don't marry a shidduch resume

The study is more concerned with online dating, but really that model is largely responsible for the shidduch resume expectation in the frum community. According to new research of psychologists Paul W. Eastwick, Eli J. Finkel and Alice H. Eagly, there is a disconnect between what people say they like on paper and what they go for in real life.  I could have told them this.
People have ideas about the abstract qualities they're looking for in a romantic partner," said Eastwick, assistant professor of psychology at Texas A&M University and lead author of the study. "But once you actually meet somebody face to face, those ideal preferences for traits tend to be quite flexible."

Finkel, associate professor of psychology at Northwestern University and co-author of the study explains: "People are not simply the average of their traits."  Consequently, the checklist approach of desirable traits " doesn't make sense" in the "search for partner…

The #1 quality sought in a relationship is ...

trust.

from http://greatergood.berkeley.edu/article/item/john_gottman_on_trust_and_betrayal/
On PsychInfo, the database that psychologists use to do a literature review, there were 96,000 references to “trust.” And it turns out that when social psychologists ask people in relationships, “What is the most desirable quality you’re looking for in a partner when you’re dating?”, trustworthiness is number one. It’s not being sexy or attractive. It’s really being able to trust somebody.

We see background -- in terms of family -- did count for the shidduch Avraham sought for his son. He looked within his own extended family. Take charge

(This is an updated version of an article I originally wrote in 2005 for Kallah Magazine. Unfortunately, the economy has gotten worse and bank rates for savings have plummeted, so it was time to put in new figures.) Are you armed and dangerous?  A credit card in your wallet could turn into a loaded weapon, triggered by your spending habits and aimed at your credit score.  A credit card has great potential – it can prove greatly beneficial or seriously harmful.  Misused, a credit card may be one of the most dangerous things to have in your possession.  Alternatively, if you maintain control over it, your credit card can actually serve as a tool to build your credit and assist you in tracking your expenditures.

Teshuva time

Everyone knows about the concept of teshuva. But sometimes people are completely oblivious to their offenses, particularly when their words or actions have caused harm to others. Not mending the breach can damage a relationship. That is true of married couples, friends, relatives, and even business relationships.

Say you step on someone's foot by accident. If they cry out in pain, you apologize. You are not excused from apologizing because you did not intentionally step on them.  That goes even for strangers. Certainly, if you want to keep that person as a friend, partner, or customer, you should be quick to apologize and perhaps even offer something nice to make up a bit for the pain you caused. Whatever it cost you to say sorry will come back to you many times over. One company found that to be true on a literal level:  $1,500 in humble pie saved them an estimated $100,000 in retained business. In my latest blog on marketing, I look at  The ROI of Humble Pie.

No polygamy

Yesterday Yeshiva Darchei Torah hosted its annual Tisha B'Av kinos. Among the illustrious list of speakers was Rabbi Greenberg who spoke very well and covered a number of key points, one of them is mentioned in the post I linked to in the previous post.  Another point he made was a reference to Rabbeinu Gershon, who held the title "meor hagola" [the light of the diaspora]. What did he do to earn such a title? The answer, attributed to R' Leibel Eiger was that his edicts were an assurance to the Jewish people. Of course he is famous for his ban on polygamy. In addition to that point for a monogamous relationship, he declared that no man may divorce his wife against her will. The Jewish people's relationship with G-d is always compared to a marriage. Rabbeinu Gershon's decrees were not just about the marriages between men and women but about the everlasting bond between G-d and His people. Though we were cast out, there is no divorce. The kethuba still stands, …

A Shabbos of Vision

There are several Shabbatot within the Jewish calendar that carry a special name.  for example, Shabbos HaGadol  is the name designated for the Sabbath day that falls out just before Passover,Shabbos  Shuva-- for the one before Yom Kippur ,Shabbos Shira --- when the Torah portion ofBeshalach is read, and there are several other Sabbaths named for theHaftorah[a selection fromBooks of the Prophets] portion read on them.  This Sabbath is among those, namedShabbos Chazon [The Shabbos of Prophetic Vision] for theHaftorah portion read from the beginning of the book ofYeshayahu[ Isaiah 1:1-27).  This haftorah is the culmination of the three sections foretelling the tragedy fo destruction designated for reading during the3 week period .  These prophecies are meant to remind us that the loss of the Temple is not part of ancient history but relevant to our lives now.  Concentrating on the words associated with those events of two thousand years ago is supposed to remind us that they still apply…

The Upside of Irrationality

Dan Ariely's The Upside of Irrationality  is easy to read and offers interesting insights that show human nature is not strictly rational in the economic sense of seeking the greatest gain at the lowest cost.  He goes through some experiments that show people will leave off a task sooner if they see it is futile (think the myth of Sisyphus). While some may think it is a dream job to be paid to do nothing, such a position can bring in income but no sense of personal fulfillment, which human beings crave. I agree with this and have experienced it myself. For example, I've been asked to write letters for nonprofit organizations that then never went out.  I found it did not make much difference to my feelings about it whether I had been paid for the work or not. It still is somewhat demoralizing to have done the work for no reason -- like taking the time to wash something that is then tossed into the garbage. Even if you get the promised $1, you would not likely want to repeat the…

Chaverim

I put in a couple plus hours every week as adispatcher for my local Chaverim. All the people who work for it do so as volunteers, but there are still expenses to cover for the purchase of equipment needed to change your flat tire, give you a boost, or get your car or door open for you. for L'Engle fans

I just finished reading A Circle of Quiet. I requested it through inter-library loan and see that it was mislabeled as fiction by the Levittown library, even though it say "non-fiction" right on the inside cover. Though she does admit that the detailed sketch she presents of  the clash between newcomers and long-time residents in her  provincial town is fictionalized, that is only one small part of the book.

This is not a novel but a meditative partial autobiography. It is not structured as a bildungsroman , though she does dwell on key memories of her seeing herself as a writer, as well as incidents that feature in her novels. L'Engle recalls being called "such a child" by one of her own children, in a good way, and that may be the same idea in having a character say something very close to that to Vicky in The Arm of the Starfish.   Those who have followed the Austin family chronicles would recognize that her daughter's refusal to eat meat from pigs aft…

Saving on groceries

I am really tired of "advice" that promises far more effect than it delivers. I had the radio on WCBS news when a person said she had the solution to buying groceries  without breaking your budget at a time when food prices have escalated. No coupons. No suggestions of buying in bulk. No suggestions of buying seasonal produce. No suggestions of planning your menus around what is on sale at your local store, so that you incorporate blueberries when they are $1.50 a pint and not when they are $4 a pint.

Her suggestion was to buy meat labeled "round" or "loin" b/c it's cheaper and less fatty than other cuts. Oh, yes, what a big help that is! The other suggestions were to shop only once a week b/c the assumption is that more trips to the store mean more likelihood of impulse buys. The fact is that shopping at only one place once a week is more efficient in terms of gas and time expenditure. But it does not really save you money on groceries. On the contr…
