TV on the road

No, it's not about portable televisions. Today, we took a trip out to a place on the North shore I hope to tell you about with pictures when I have time to get into more detail. But on the way back, we stopped for gas at a Gulf station where there was a TV at the pump. I've never seen it before.  So I Googled it and found http://www.gstv.com/.   The selling point for the gas stations is "enhance your customers' fueling experience with GSTV, resulting in increased traffic and higher C-store sales."  But of course, the money is in advertising, and GSTV claims that it "reaches the consumer 'off the couch' and ready to take action. Advertisers can target receptive audiences, influence and motivate purchasing decisions." I don't know, just because you are on the road doesn't mean you're going to set right out to buy what you've seen advertised.  Actually, what seemed to be on was a cooking show, so in the couple of minutes w…

Review of the cookbook you could win

I have to admit, I have been 20-something for some time, so I do not make up the target audience for Kosher by Design: Teens and 20-Somethings. As a parent, though, I do have access to some teens.  So I had a couple of my daughters look it over.  Kosher by Design: Teens and 20-Something  is a beautifully presented book. Glossy, full color  photos -- one full page for each of the 100 recipes plus additional one for the party/entertaining ideas section at the end -- showcase the recipes and ideas to great effect and make a very attractive book.

The illustrations, certainly, do inspire this groups to call out, "Let's make this!"  Some of the recipes are very easy to prepare from basic ingredients, like Salami and Egg Scramble, White Graham Clusters, and the aptly named Easy Fudge.  My daughter tackled the Chocolate Chocolate Chip Sticks, which delivered a rich, chocolate flavor, and the Peanut Butter and Banana French Toast.  The latter recipe she adapted for one serving…

Disasters averted

This is the story of my morning -- actually less than 2 hours of it.
One of my daughters missed the bus to school.  Naturally, she expected I would driver her.  We went into the car, started the engine and heard "clack, clack, clack."  In other words, it didn't start. So I put in a call to Chaverim.  As a dispatcher, I was able to log directly into the system and enter the information rather than dictating it to someone else on phone duty at the time. Someone got to our house within 5 minutes. (Warning:  speaking as a dispatcher, I can tell you it is unrealistic to expect such rapid results at all times; it all depends on the position and availability of the people.).  So we got the car started, and my daughter made it to school on time.  Not wanting to take a chance on my car dying on me when I wasn't at home, I drove directly from the school to my mechanic, John's Auto Repair in Woodmere.  He had his guy test things out.  While I was concerned that it was somet…

Disclaimer: I don't like all the Dr. Brown flavors and am not really much of a soda drinker. But having the range of flavors represented suggests range and color, good things in writing. Interesting to find how the (12 pack of 12 oz. glass bottles of) cream soda -- is described on Amazon: "- "It's Kosher & Creamy But Not Milchik"

Rant on attitude toward girls, prayer, and eating

My family is rather at odds with our daughters' school on this.  Like many RW schools, the schedule does not accommodate breakfast in school, though the girls are expected to daven together.  They are directed to daven brachos before eating at home.  That is, obviously, not a lechatchila and seems to assume that women's chiyuv is thus limited.  So why bother davening everything else?  Also as they do get to eat earlier, they do tend to do other things, as well, before davening, delaying way past ideal time and sometimes barely even making chatzos.  Can you ever imagine that being the schedule set for a boy's school?  Of course, not!  But the RW general trend is to be yotze kol hadeos or at least rov.  So why pick up the more mekil views with respect to the chiyuv of tefila and lo tochlu al hadam?

Mean parents that we are, we have our daughters daven the key parts of Shacaharis at home, so they could eat breakfast at home (or on the way) and then coast through the rest with…
