Greatness just before death

There are a number of times in which it is recounted yesh koneh olamo besha'a achas. It works even for someone who led a wicked life but turned himself around just before his death and achieved redemption. Perhaps, though, we can consider the possibility of achieving greatness just before death even if one was not particularly sinful during life.
