n many of the Orthodox Jewish circles found in New York, it is common to check out a proposed shidduch [proposed match] prior to agreeing to meet. Typically, the singles or their parents will offer names and phone numbers as references (see just send me your resume The references are usually teachers or others who know them from their schools, friends, and neighbors. Those who are of a more suspicious nature will not accept the word of the designated references and will try to get information from their own connections.
