Sheitels, extensions, and Indian ceremonies, oh my!

Many years ago, I published an article on the American sheitel phenomenon that I posted here: http://kallahmagazine.blogspot.com/2008/11/sheitels-hair-to-stay.html

Now The Hustle published an extensive piece on the exploding human hair trade that is projected to grow from $7 billion to $10 billion within  five years. Most of it is not from sheitels, but they do merit a mention:

"The market for sheitels (wigs worn by Orthodox Jewish wives for religious reasons) is estimated to be worth $60m. These high-end wigs ($800 to $5.5k) tend to come from specialist suppliers.'

Incidentally, though, it also shows a picture of that Indian ceremony that served as the source of a lot of the hair that went into sheitels, rendering them prohibited. The same pic with more details on the practice and its role in the hair industry appears in https://www.amusingplanet.com/2017/11/the-hairy-secret-behind-indian-temples.html
